Meet MSPE Member Timothy Johnson, PE, Cap’n

Cap’n Tim Johnson, PE is Principal of Captains Engineering and Consulting. He served as TimJohnsonPresident of MSPE (2004-2005). In May 2015, he retired from a 15-year career as Assistant Professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Technology at Wentworth Institute of Technology. Tim is currently pursuing a doctorate in Computer Science at Pace University, as well as a venture with his son to develop a revolutionary infrared temperature device. MSPE Invites Engineering Community to Support the Next Generation of Problem Solvers by Sponsoring MATHCOUNTS

MA-MATHCOUNTS-LogoForWEBDuring the 2015-16 school year, more than 1,000 students in 120 middle schools across the state will experience Massachusetts MATHCOUNTS, a unique math enrichment program that uplifts students in 6-8 grade who love math OR fear math. MATHCOUNTS engages their critical thinking and problem-solving skills, prepares them for math in high school and college, and encourages them to select and succeed in careers that fulfill our nation’s demand for excellence in the fields of Science, Engineering, Technology, and Math.

FE ‘Right of Passage’

The new FE exam format appears to fraction engineering into specialties that don’t communicate with each other and further reduces the feelings of “community” within the profession. We talk about “raising the bar” and broadening the humanities background of engineers, but the FE is narrowing even the technical scope we expect of engineers (“The Evolution of the FE,” March, p. 20).

Member Resource: Northeast Regional Calendar

main_logo_smallThe MSPE website (MSPE.com) now includes the Northeast Regional Calendar page, which is devoted to promoting events offered by the 12 Societies of Professional Engineers throughout our region (CT, DC, DE, MA, ME, MD, NH, NJ, NY, PA, RI, and VT).

This resource provides all NSPE members with information about regional meetings, events, and opportunities to participate or become involved.  The calendar may be viewed in monthly, weekly, or daily format, and leaders of each State Society have been provided with access to post their events.

The National Society of Professional Engineers has awarded MSPE’s own Kenneth R. Skinger, PE, Esq. with the distinguished title of Fellow Member of NSPE (F-NSPE).

At the April meeting of the MSPE Board of Directors, President Christopher Barros, PE, presented Mr. Skinger with a Fellowship Pin and Certificate on behalf of NSPE and MSPE.

He also read a letter sent to Ken from NSPE President Robert A. Green, P.E., F.NSPE, congratulating him on his outstanding service to the Society, and personally expressing his gratitude for his “support not just of NSPE, but also of our honored profession”.

The NSPE leadership established the Fellow member grade in the year 2000 to honor those active Society members who have demonstrated exemplary service to their profession, their Society, and their community.

MATHCOUNTS State Competition Winners Announced

MSPE invited the Metro Chapter MATHCOUNTS Competition winning team from Clarke Middle School in Lexington as guests to the Engineers Week Luncheon.

The excitement is building for our state’s MATHLETES!  In February, MATHCOUNTS chapter competitions whittled down the field of competitors that advanced to the State Competition in March.  776 student competitors, representing 106 middle schools throughout MA, were reduced to a total of 125 students who competed on March 8 at Wentworth Institute of Technology.

The State Competition winners:
Peter Rowley, Grade 9 – William Diamond Middle School – Lexington
Jeremy Chen, Grade 8 – The Sage School – Foxboro
David Ma, Grade 8 – The Roxbury Latin School – Roxbury
Jeffery Chang, Grade 7 – Jonas Clarke Middle School – Lexington

These students are now preparing to defend our state’s National Championship title, before they travel to the 2014 MATHCOUNTS National Competition in Orlando, Florida from May 8-11.
