FE ‘Right of Passage’

The new FE exam format appears to fraction engineering into specialties that don’t communicate with each other and further reduces the feelings of “community” within the profession. We talk about “raising the bar” and broadening the humanities background of engineers, but the FE is narrowing even the technical scope we expect of engineers (“The Evolution of the FE,” March, p. 20).

Member Resource: Northeast Regional Calendar

main_logo_smallThe MSPE website (MSPE.com) now includes the Northeast Regional Calendar page, which is devoted to promoting events offered by the 12 Societies of Professional Engineers throughout our region (CT, DC, DE, MA, ME, MD, NH, NJ, NY, PA, RI, and VT).

This resource provides all NSPE members with information about regional meetings, events, and opportunities to participate or become involved.  The calendar may be viewed in monthly, weekly, or daily format, and leaders of each State Society have been provided with access to post their events.

MSPE Seeks Appointee for MCCA’s Designer Selection Committee

MSPE is often approached by groups throughout the Commonwealth with requests to appoint or recommend qualified candidates to serve on Designer Selection Committees.

MCCA LogoThe Massachusetts Convention Center Authority (MCAA, or the “Authority”) is currently soliciting MSPE’s assistance in recommending qualified engineer candidates for appointment to their Designer Selection Panel. The Designer Selection Panel consists of six members, and the Authority is seeking to fill an upcoming vacancy for an engineer, for the term of two years.  If you or someone you know may be interested in this position, please contact MSPE Treasurer Tom Vaughan, PE via email or call him at 781-344-0087.

Register by July 25 for FE Exam Prep Course (Begins Aug. 1)

This is the LAST OPPORTUNITY to take this course, before the exam format changes in 2014.

The Massachusetts Society of Engineers (MSPE) is offering a Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) Examination Preparatory Course, to support new and experienced engineers who plan to take the FE Exam on October 26, 2013.  The course begins on August 1, 2013, and meets once a week for 13 weeks, on Thursday evenings from 5-8 p.m. at the CB&I office at 150 Royall Street in Canton, MA.  The course cost is $725, which includes 39 hours of instruction and all course materials. Space is limited to 30, the registration deadline is July 25, 2013. (more…)

MA Students Win First Place in 2013 National MATHCOUNTS Competition

MSPE is a major Massachusetts sponsor of MATHCOUNTS, a national math enrichment program and competition for students in grades 6-8.  At the 2013 national competition, held in Washington, DC on May 10, MA students placed first in the nation for the second consecutive year.

Massachusetts students successfully defended their Championship title by beating 55 teams from across the nation.Individually, out of 224 competitors, Matthew Lipman placed 33rd and  Michael Ren placed 27th.  Both James Lin and Alec Sun made it into the Countdown Round, in which the top 12 competitors compete directly to determine the National Champion.  For Alec Sun an 8th grader, this was his third time in the Countdown Round – a first in the 30-year history of the competition.   James Lin placed as quarter finalist in the Countdown Round.  Alec Sun, made it all the way to the final round and won the National Individual Championship.
