Team Massachusetts Places Third in National MATHCOUNTS Competition

Team Massachusetts placed third out of 56 teams at the National MATHCOUNTS Competition from May 13-15 in Orlando, Florida – adding to a proud history of Top 10 national-level finishes for MA.

Each student “mathlete” also placed individually in the top 25% of the 224 best mathletes from across the U.S. who advanced to nationals after 90,000 students competed in their local and state contests.

The four students who represented Team Massachusetts are Nikhil Byrapuram (grade 8) from The Pike School in Andover; Christopher Cheng and Adam Ge (both grade 8); and Selena Ge (grade 7) from the Jonas Clarke Middle School in Lexington.

The team was accompanied by Coach Josh Frost of Jonas Clarke Middle School in Lexington and MSPE Director John J. Hayden, PE, State MATHOUNTS Coordinator and Senior Transportation Engineer at Stantec Consulting Services, Inc.

Sept 16, 2020: Tour of BELD’s Watson Power Station

MSPE invites all members and non-member guests to join us on Wednesday, September 16 from 5 – 6:30 p.m. to experience a presentation and tour of the Braintree Electric Light Department’s power plant, the Watson Generating Station.

The event will kick off with introductions and refreshments, followed by a site overview presentation and safety notes before distribution of personal protective equipment (see below). Participants will then proceed to the production facility and begin touring the power plant.

WHEN: Wednesday, September 16, 2020 | 5:00 – 6:30 p.m.
WHERE: BELD Main Office | 150 Potter Road, Braintree, MA 02184
COST: FREE (with RSVP)

Take the Milton F. Lunch Ethics Contest Challenge!

NSPE members are invited to match their wits and knowledge of engineering ethics with experienced PEs and engineering students throughout the country, in the 2020 NSPE Milton F. Lunch Ethics Contest. All current NSPE individual members through their NSPE state societies are encouraged to participate.

NSPE will provide the 2020 winning entry author with a cash award of $2,000, a certificate, and recognition in PE magazine.

This year, NSPE’s Board of Ethical Review is furnishing three key ethical issues plus one open-ended issue for you to select one , and submit a video, photo essay, poster, or an essay or PowerPoint presentation not to exceed 1,000 words that expresses your views and demonstrates an understanding of the ethical issues involved.

Volunteer Opportunities to Support Our State’s Mathletes This February

Chapter Competitions begin Saturday, February 1 2020; the first of 7 contests in Feb at middle schools throughout MA, leading up to the State Competition on March 7.

OPPORTUNITY to VOLUNTEER just 3 to 4 hours of your time 
at one (or more) of 8 competitions
Nearly 100 volunteers are needed to support 7 Chapter Competitions in February at middle schools throughout the state, as well as the State Competition in March.
No experience is necessary; you must simply be over 21 and not related to a competing student. The commitment is just 3-4 hours, serving as a proctor or scorer.

NHJES/NSPE Northeast Regional Meeting OCT 17-19 in Portsmouth, NH

The NSPE Northeast Regional Meeting and the New Hampshire Joint Engineering Societies Conference will be held at the Sheraton Portsmouth Harborside Hotel in Portsmouth, NH from October 17-19, 2018.

Join Professional Engineers from across the northeast as we gather to share challenges, find solutions, and expand our networks. 6 PDHs will be awarded; a NY State PDH track is available; and parking is included with Friday seminars. Plan to bring your family and enjoy Portsmouth and all that the Seacoast has to offer!
Day 1 (Thursday 10/17): Evening Reception
Day 2 (Friday, 10/18): Full Day of Educational Sessions, followed by Dinner
Day 3 (Saturday, 10/19): Morning Meeting: NSPE NE Regional Business Meeting

Team-MA Ranked First at 2019 National Math Competition

As a dedicated supporter of the Massachusetts MATHCOUNTS program, MSPE is pleased to announce that our state’s Mathletes once again earned top placement at the 2019 National MATHCOUNTS Competition on May 12-13.

MSPE Director and State MATHCOUNTS Coordinator, John Hayden, PE, said, “This vital program empowers students to solve problems, work in teams, and positively contribute to our society and world. I am very proud of the 900+ Massachusetts students who participated this year, and the top four who represented us and won top honors at National competition. Without the dedicated support of MSPE, as well as volunteers and sponsors, this program could not happen.” READ FULL STORY
