MSPE Calls for 2014 NSPE Honor Awards Nominations

The National Society of Professional Engineers (NSPE) has directed all State Societies to issue a Call for Nominations for 2014 NSPE Honor Awards.

The deadline for submission of nomination forms is January 31, 2014.

The three awards and their summaries include:

The NSPE Award
The NSPE Award is the highest award given to an individual by the Society.  It is presented to an engineer who has made outstanding contributions to the engineering profession, the public welfare, and humankind.

The NSPE Distinguished Service Award
This award recognizes an NSPE Licensed Member for exceptional contributions to the Engineering Profession, to one’s community, and specifically to NSPE.

The NSPE Young Engineer of the Year Award
This award recognizes a young NSPE member who has made outstanding contributions to the Engineering Profession and the community during the early years of one’s career.

Massachusetts Students Seek to Defend #1-In-Nation Status in MATHCOUNTS

Massachusetts students won the MATHCOUNTS National Championship for the second consecutive year in 2013.

MSPE is once again the major Massachusetts provider of support and leadership for MATHCOUNTS, a nationwide math enrichment, coaching and competition program for students in grades 6 through 8.

The program promotes math achievement with all the challenge of a school sports event.

Student Mathletes train individually and in teams, and can compete in local, state & national competitions.

This school year, 134 middle schools throughout Massachusetts have registered for the MATHCOUNTS National Math Club Program, and 57 of them have also registered for the MATHCOUNTS Competition Series Program.  More than 800 students statewide will participate.

This year is especially important, because Massachusetts students will seek to defend the National Championship Title they have earned for the past two years, in 2012 and 2013.

Anthony Cipolla Joins MSPE Board

Anthony Cipolla is a Project Engineer with Spin Analytical, Inc. in Berwick, ME.  He recently joined the MSPE Board of Directors, and has answered the questions below, so we may know him better. Welcome aboard, Anthony, and THANK YOU for your dedication to MSPE!

Q:  Why did you join MSPE?
A:
 I joined MSPE initially because it is a great way to get involved in the community and stay current with the engineering industry.  I decided to serve on the Board because it gives me an opportunity to help promote the importance of science and engineering to a younger generation.

Q:  What are your goals as an engineer?
A:
 My goals are to get my P.E. license and to develop products that contribute to helping people.

MSPE Hosted 2013 Holiday Celebration for Members, Non-members and Guests

MSPE hosted all members, their guests and colleagues to the Society’s annual Holiday Celebration on Friday, December 13 at the Newport Art Museum.

They enjoyed A Dickens Christmas Feast, featuring an interactive re-telling of Charles Dickens’ classic tale ‘A Christmas Carol’ by the Marley Bridges Theatre Company.  It was an evening of song, dance and good cheer accompanied by a gourmet meal.

Guests savored the flavors of the season, and experienced A Christmas Carol as never before!

MSPE Enjoys a Private Tour at Naval Submarine Base in Groton CT

On September 5, 2013 MSPE members, non-members, and their guests enjoyed a specially-arranged Escorted Tour of the Submarine Training School at New London Naval Submarine Base, Groton, CT.  The tour was nearly sold-out, as it was limited to 16 participants and 14 attended, despite a short lead-time for event promotion.

Prior to the tour, participants were encouraged to arrive early and tour the Submarine Force Museum/USS Nautilus (www.ussnautilus.org) on their own. A highlight of the tour was the surface navigation simulator, which provides a 360 degree view of the ocean as seen from the sail.

MSPE Installs New Officers at 2013 Annual Meeting & Dinner Event

MSPE members and guests enjoyed expansive views of Boston’s skyline as they gathered to celebrate the society’s progress and look forward to the future during the 2013 MSPE Annual Meeting and Dinner, held on June 6 at the Top of the Hub Restaurant.  After a brief social reception, outgoing MSPE President Kenneth R. Skinger, PE, Esq. led the ceremony to install the new 2013-2015 officers.  He began by presenting each officer by their name, title, employer, years of service to the Society, and new officer title.  He then announced their duties, as prescribed in the state Constitution and Bylaws, which include:  Inspire confidence, Provide direction, Motivate to action, and Be accountable. Register by July 25 for FE Exam Prep Course (Begins Aug. 1)

This is the LAST OPPORTUNITY to take this course, before the exam format changes in 2014.

The Massachusetts Society of Engineers (MSPE) is offering a Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) Examination Preparatory Course, to support new and experienced engineers who plan to take the FE Exam on October 26, 2013.  The course begins on August 1, 2013, and meets once a week for 13 weeks, on Thursday evenings from 5-8 p.m. at the CB&I office at 150 Royall Street in Canton, MA.  The course cost is $725, which includes 39 hours of instruction and all course materials. Space is limited to 30, the registration deadline is July 25, 2013. (more…)

MA Students Win First Place in 2013 National MATHCOUNTS Competition

MSPE is a major Massachusetts sponsor of MATHCOUNTS, a national math enrichment program and competition for students in grades 6-8.  At the 2013 national competition, held in Washington, DC on May 10, MA students placed first in the nation for the second consecutive year.

Massachusetts students successfully defended their Championship title by beating 55 teams from across the nation.Individually, out of 224 competitors, Matthew Lipman placed 33rd and  Michael Ren placed 27th.  Both James Lin and Alec Sun made it into the Countdown Round, in which the top 12 competitors compete directly to determine the National Champion.  For Alec Sun an 8th grader, this was his third time in the Countdown Round – a first in the 30-year history of the competition.   James Lin placed as quarter finalist in the Countdown Round.  Alec Sun, made it all the way to the final round and won the National Individual Championship.

On December 7, 2012, MSPE treated guests to A Dickens Christmas Feast, an interactive, unique re-telling of Charles Dickens’ classic tale “A Christmas Carol” by the Marley Bridges Theatre Company.  The annual event, held at the Newport Art Museum, was an excellent opportunity for MSPE members to gather and enjoy the season.
