MSPE Committees

As an MSPE member, you are invited to participate on a committee. Your volunteer support can make an important difference – to benefit yourself, your community, and the engineering profession.

The MSPE Board of Directors and various committees are comprised of Professional Engineers representing all disciplines, from industry and private practice, who volunteer their time and talent in a variety of ways. Committees make recommendations in accordance with procedures adopted by the Board and, when requested by the Board, assist in their implementation. All committees report to the Board of Directors.

Committees

Membership

The role of the Membership Committee is to develop and implement an action plan for MSPE membership development. To be effective, the Society needs members. MSPE’s ability to serve the community, support the goals of our national affiliate (NSPE), and develop leaders capable of serving the organization is directly related to the size and strength of its membership base.The key responsibilities of the MSPE Membership Committee include: Develop committee goals to achieve MSPE membership goals for the coming year; Educate and train members about the importance of recruitment and retention of members; Work with the Programs Committee to conduct member surveys to ensure that MSPE programs serve current member and community needs, and initiate changes in response to their feedback, to ensure that the Society remains relevant to its members.

Programs

The Programs Committee researches and coordinates programs including continuing-education (CEU-credit) programs, as well as site tours, guest speakers, roundtable discussions and other programs of interest and benefit to members, affiliates, and prospects. The committee serves as a liaison between institutions with engineering departments, as well as MA engineering firms, and event sponsors. The Programs Committee also cultivates and maintains relationships with leaders of other professional associations.

Outreach

The Community Outreach Committee researches and coordinates programs that promote and inspire an interest in engineering among various community audiences. Examples of successful MSPE outreach programs include MATHCOUNTS, a program that promotes math enrichment for 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students, with the goal of encouraging young students to pursue careers in the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) fields.

Publications

The Publications Committee gathers and coordinates timely and relevant information and resources, for promoting to members and prospects via the MSPE website, electronic announcements, and newsletter. The News committee also supports other MSPE committees by preparing news releases and announcements as needed, to inform affiliate organizations and the media of MSPE news and events.

Government Affairs

The Legislative and Government Affairs Committee communicates the ethics, standards, goals and accomplishments of the Society to registered Professional Engineers, related professionals, government and the public. The Committee keeps abreast of pending and desirable laws and regulations in Massachusetts that affect the engineering community, and promotes changes deemed desirable.  The Committee develops and maintains productive relations with related professional organizations, the news media, legislators and public agencies.

Young Engineers

All MSPE/NSPE members 35 years of age and younger are part of the Young Engineers interest group. This group facilitates knowledge sharing across geographical and disciplinary lines among younger working engineers.  Young Engineers build leadership skills, receive tailored information, and can obtain and retain their licenses with support of MSPE/NSPE and the YE interest group. Young engineer members receive the group’s quarterly electronic newsletter, Young PE Quarterly.
