May 2025 – Congratulations to Team Massachusetts for earning a FIRST PLACE FINISH out of 56 teams at the National MATHCOUNTS Competition held from May 10-12 in Washington, D.C.! The win continues our state’s proud tradition of top national-level finishes for Team Massachusetts middle school Mathletes.
All four students individually placed in the top 13% of the 224 top mathletes in the U.S. Shlok Mukind rose to 8th place and Brandon Ni rose to 2nd place among the top 12 finishers who advanced to compete in the fiercely-competitive Countdown Round.
After four fast-paced elimination rounds, Brandon secured the title of Second Place Individual Mathlete in the nation, as well as a $7,500 scholarship toward college and the admiration of Massachusetts residents toward his and the team’s extraordinary efforts to represent our state, earning well-deserved national recognition. May 2025 – Team Massachusetts Mathletes were honored with a visit from Dr. Fabrice Kandjanga, Math Content Specialist with the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education’s Center for Instructional Support, before their last practice in preparation for National Competition.
Dr. Kandjanga congratulated the students on winning the Massachusetts State Competition, and wished them well as they prepare and travel to represent our state at the 2025 National MATHCOUNTS Competition in Washington, D.C. from May 10-12. LEARN MORE
Massachusetts MATHCOUNTS: A Long History of SUCCESS
The Massachusetts MATHCOUNTS program has grown to serve nearly 800 middle school students from 100+ schools across the Commonweath. This highly successful program has experienced such consistent double-digit growth, that more volunteers and sponsors are needed every year to keep up with the demand.
NATIONAL COMPETITION RESULTS in PRIOR YEARS:
May 2024 – Team Massachusetts placed 2nd out of 56 teams at the National MATHCOUNTS Competition held from May 11-13 in Washington, D.C., adding to a proud history of Top 10 national-level finishes for Massachusetts. All four students also placed individually in the top 25% of the 224 top mathletes from across the U.S., and Selena Ge placed second among the top 12 finishers, so she advanced to compete in exciting head-to-head Countdown Round, where she ultimately earned the title of Second Place Individual Champion.
Team Massachusetts included Rajarshi Mandal (Grade 8) from Diamond Middle School in Lexington; and Danyang Xu (Grade 8), Selena Ge (Grade 8), and Brandon Ni (Grade 6) from Clarke Middle School in Lexington. The team was accompanied by Coach Josh Frost of Jonas Clarke Middle School in Lexington and MSPE Director John J. Hayden, PE, State MATHOUNTS Coordinator and Senior Transportation Engineer at Stantec Consulting Services, Inc.

May 2023 – Team Massachusetts placed 3rd out of 56 teams at the National MATHCOUNTS Competition from May 13-15 in Orlando, Florida – adding to a proud history of Top 10 national level finishes for MA. Each student “mathlete” also placed individually in the top 25% of the 224 best Mathletes from across the U.S. who advanced to nationals after 90,000 students competed in their local and state contests.
The four students who represented Team Massachusetts are Nikhil Byrapuram (grade 8) from The Pike School in Andover; Christopher Cheng and Adam Ge (both grade 8); and Selena Ge (grade 7) from the Jonas Clarke Middle School in Lexington. READ FULL STORY
May 2022: For the 2021-22 school year, more than 800 student Mathletes from across the state participated in 7 Virtual Chapter Competitions in February, to determine the 130 students who would advance to the State Competition in March, from which 4 Mathletes emerged to make up the Team that advanced to represent Massachusetts at the 2022 National MATHCOUNTS Competition in May.
The MA State team included: Adam and Selena Ge, brother and sister from Blanchard Middle School in Westford; Raymond Gao from R.J. Grey Junior High School in Acton; and William Hua from Jonas Clarke Middle School in Lexington. They were coached once again by Joshua Frost from Jonas Clarke Middle School in Lexington. Team Massachusetts successfully competed against 220 other students from across the nation at the National Competition in Washington, DC on May 8-9, 2022.

2019: Team Massachusetts earned FIRST PLACE in the nation at the 2019 National MATHCOUNTS Competition in Orlando, Florida on May 12-13. In Team Competition, Massachusetts won First Place. Team members include Kaylee Ji, Jeff Lin, Daniel Mai and Max Xu. Florida’s state team placed second, and California’s state team placed third. In Individual Competition, two students earned first and second place in the Written Competition, earning spots in the Countdown Round, in which the nation’s top 12 Mathletes compete in head-to-head match-ups.

2018: At the 2018 National MATHCOUNTS competition in Washington DC, Team Massachusetts placed 6th in the Nation out of 56 teams!
2017: At the 2017 National MATHCOUNTS competition in Orlando, FL on May 14-15, Team Massachusetts placed 8th in the nation out of 56 teams.
2016: At the 2016 National MATHCOUNTS competition on May 9 in Washington, DC, Team Massachusetts placed 5th in the Nation out of 56 state teams.
2015: At the 2015 National MATHCOUNTS Competition on May 8, 2015 in Boston, Team Massachusetts placed 3rd in the nation out of 56 state teams. Additionally, each of our state’s individual ‘Mathletes’ placed in the Top 20 Percent of 224 of the brightest students in the nation, and two of them earned their way into to the final Countdown Round – a fast-paced, one-on-one, elimination style oral contest.
2014: Team Massachusetts was ranked in the Top 10 teams 8th in the nation at the 2014 National MATHCOUNTS Competition, earning 8th place out of 56 teams. Additionally, each of our state’s individual ‘Mathletes’ placed in the Top 50 out of 224 of the brightest students in the nation.
2013: Team Massachusetts Earned FIRST PLACE at the National Competition; Alec Sun Ranked as the First place Individual, all and all four team member placed in the Top 33 out of 224 of the brightest Mathletes in the nation.
2012: Team Massachusetts Earned FIRST PLACE at the National Competition; and all four team member placed in the Top 23 out of 224 of the brightest Mathletes in the nation.
