Massachusetts student team coached by MSPE members places first in national MathCounts competition
Four outstanding Massachusetts middle and junior high school students who represented Team Massachusetts won first place in the 2012 National MATHCOUNTS Competition.
MATHCOUNTS is a national competition in math enrichment sponsored by Raytheon, NSPE, MSPE and other professional engineering societies.
Students who participated in the MATHCOUNTS Program began their long journey to the national competition in September of 2011 in their home chapter. Across Massachusetts, 757 students, from 94 schools competed in six chapter level events. In December and January each chapter selected four to ten students to represent them at the chapter-level competitions, held in February. The best of those teams and individuals proceeded to Boston’s Wentworth Institute of Technology in March to compete in the State Competition.
The winners of the state competition went on to represent Massachusetts at the National MATHCOUNTS Competition, held at Disney World in Orlando, Florida, where they competed against 220 of the nation’s brightest students. The winning students include: Niket Gowravaram from RJ Grey Junior High School in Acton; James Lin from McCall Middle School in Winchester; Mathew Lipman from Meadowbrook School in Weston; and Alec Sun from Jonas Clarke Middle School in Lexington. The team was coached by State Coach Joshua Frost from Jonas Clarke Middle School in Lexington.
