MSPE Coordinates Successful CHP Seminar & Tour of Harpoon Brewery
The Massachusetts Society of Professional Engineers (MSPE) held a Combined Heat & Power (CHP) Seminar at the Harpoon Brewery Beer Hall in Boston, MA on Thursday, September 17 from 2-5 p.m.
Participants enjoyed three presentations from experienced industry professionals, as well as a full tour of the Harpoon Brewery.
Jim Koontz, President of Sales for the Kinsley Group, presented an overview of the pros and cons of the different CHP prime movers as well as information on how to properly size a CHP system for maximum efficiency and return on investment.
Babak Enanyati, Lead R&D Engineer at National Grid, reviewed the technical and protection requirements for CHP electric systems when connecting to the utility. Babak also educated the group on the impact that interconnected CHP systems have on the utility’s infrastructure and operations.
Jim Ruberti, CHP/DG Program Manager at Eversource, outlined the electric utility interconnection process for CHP systems including the typical steps, timeline, costs, and best practices to avoid common pitfalls. Jim discussed the various tiered incentives available for CHP systems and how to apply for them.
During the brewery tour, participants learned about the history of Harpoon and got an an up-close view of the entire brewing process from knowledgeable Harpoon Brewery staff members.
Attendees were also treated to a special tour of the Brewery’s own CHP system where they learned about the design, installation, and daily operations of the system.
